3DS

We're making online payments more secure

At PRA Group your privacy and data is important to us so, to help prevent fraud, we are adding some extra security checks for when you make payments on our website; this is called 3D Secure Authentication

3D Secure ( 3DS) provides a secure online payment service for Visa and Mastercard and is an additional layer of security for online payments. This is done by adding a two-factor authentication process.

Introducing 3D Secure to our online payment process reduces the chance of someone fraudulently using your debit card on our website.

We will now ask you to enter:

1. Your name

2. Your card details

3. NEW – enter additional security code that has been sent to you by your card provider

Whether or not you are asked for additional information will depend on your card provider. This may come as a:

  • code sent via text message for you to enter to complete the transaction
  • code sent via email for you to complete the transaction
  • confirmation through your bank provider mobile app

We, or your cardholder, will never call you with this information.

If you’re using your mobile phone to make the payment, you may verify yourself as the cardholder through face recognition or fingerprint.

During the payment process, you will be taken to your card provider’s page to complete the additional information needed to make the payment. You will see either ‘Verified by Visa’ or ‘Mastercard SecureCode’ logos on the page.

If you are a returning customer and have made regular payments in the past, your bank may not need the extra step to complete the payment.

It is likely when you have been making payments online recently that you have already experienced 3DS, many retailers have introduced some form of 3DS.

1. Additional information will prove it’s really you making the payment

2. Frictionless authentication means if this is a regular payment your bank provider can decide not to challenge you and process the payment without the two-factor authentication

3. These updates overall will provide a better experience for our customers in terms of both security and efficiency.

By contacting any of the Credit Reference Agencies (CRAs), you can see find out how your credit report has been how your credit report has been impacted; you can also request a copy of your credit report. The CRAs are: Experian, Equifax, or Transunion ; note: you may be charged a fee depending on the CRA you use. For a free monthly report, which is 30 days behind the main service, you can use: Noddle or ClearScore.

Just follow the steps to make your payment as normal and there will be clear instructions on what you need to do.

You may wish to check with your bank provider if your card is set up for 3DS and that they have the correct mobile phone number and email address to send you codes to complete the payment.

If you don’t get a code and are concerned please contact your card provider directly. If you have further issues during payment please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

If this is a regular payment, your bank provider may not ask for the code.

3D Secure went live on 1st June 2021.

3DS 1.0 – a single code used as two-factor authentication with the customer’s bank provider.

3DS 2.0 – the same as 3DS 1.0 however ten times more data used to determine the user is who they say they are. This takes into account payment history, the device being used, and more.

PRA Group is opting for the latter: 3DS 2.0. When 3DS was created it was designed with only one personal device in mind. Since then customers use multiple devices on a daily basis from mobile and tablets to laptops and dezsktops and the use of a single code for authentication is no longer enough.

3DS 2.0 helps to remove any friction caused between devices and eliminates concerns of users who fear their password may be jeopardised. 3DS 2.0 works in the same way as 1.0 but during the process 2.0 communicates ten times more information between the merchant and the user, not just a single code. This can include data such as; the device being used and the customer’s payment history. Less friction is caused during the process because of the additional information provided and the customer won’t realise that these security checks are being carried out during the payment process. It all works in the background for the user to create a better and more secure experience online.
